Let’s face it, we were all first time homeowners and apartment dwellers at one point. We didn’t know any better. That big grate in the wall or ceiling? Bah- Surely, it has something to do with the A/C, but I’m staying cool and that’s all that matters. But did you know, changing your home air filter is one of the most important maintenance items you can perform? This week on the Wire, we’re talking air filtration, and how it can save you money each month!

A new season is upon us, and it’s recommended that homeowners change their home air filter at least once every three months, and even less if you have pets or live in a dusty environment. With Fall on the way, it’s the perfect time for a reminder to crack open that dusty vent and find the size of your air filter. Then, head down to your local hardware store, pick up a few (they’re too cheap not to) and get home and replace. It’s a 5 minute job that will have you breathing easier, literally.

The primary job of your home air filter is to clean the air that circulates through your HVAC system. The air filter is designed with fibers, usually made of fiberglass, that trap the unwanted elements contained in your home’s air. These can include: pollen, animal fur, dead skin cells and bacteria. Yuck!

You also will find that with a new air filter, your home will warm and cool itself more efficiently. Air flows smoother through a clean air filter providing quicker heating and cooling. It’s the equivalent of water flowing through a straw compared to a garden hose. And in the world of energy efficiency, that means you’re saving money on your electricity bill each month by lowering your HVAC usage.

Rest assured, with 4Change Energy, you’re already getting a great rate on your electricity, but taking little steps to better improve your home’s HVAC system can lead to better savings month to month. It’s a no brainer, so what are you waiting for? Go check your home air filter!
